Michael Downing began his career as a director and performer in the theatre, before developing an interest in film directing. In 2001, he began his studies at the American Film Institute, earning his diploma in 2003 and taking home the Student Film Academy Award for his short film Fine. He continued directing short films – among them, Clean-Rite Cowboy and Why Don't You Dance, which won several awards at the Toronto, Clermont-Ferrand and Palm Springs festivals.
His fine attention to actor's performances and staging naturally led him to commercial direction, which he has been doing since 2005, and has garnered him attention for his humor and the dramatic emphasis of his narration. He has directed commercials for numerous companies and organizations – among them, Comcast, Staples, the Canadian Ministry of Health and Science World.
